About
Story
An empire built through sacrifice, ambition, and determination.
Three women who would define its legacy.
November 12, 1914 · San Antonio, Texas
After a long day at the Pearl Brewery, Otto Koehler left his office and called for his horse and buggy. But instead of heading home to his wife, Emma, he took a detour south through San Antonio.
He stopped outside a small cottage on Hunstock Avenue. Inside were two other women named Emma.
Koehler tied off his horse, walked up the front steps and was let inside. He removed his coat and made his way to Emma Burgemeister's bedroom.
What began as a private conversation soon grew louder. Voices sharpened. An argument erupted behind the bedroom door.
Multiple shots were fired from a .32-caliber automatic pistol.
What followed was a scandal that spread far beyond San Antonio — and a trial that captivated a nation.
Some would fight for the truth. Some would try to bury it. Some would escape it.
Years earlier, after his father went bankrupt, seventeen-year-old Otto Koehler set out from Germany for America in pursuit of something better. In St. Louis, he entered the brewing industry and became a protégé of Adolphus Busch, co-founder of Anheuser-Busch, who sent him south to help lead the Lone Star Brewery in San Antonio. From there, Koehler rose to become president of the San Antonio Brewing Association, where he created Pearl beer and built one of the South's great brewing empires.
Beside him was Emma Koehler — composed, strategic, and often underestimated. After an accident altered the course of their lives, two other women named Emma entered their world.
As secrets deepen and loyalties fracture, World War I, the temperance movement and Prohibition bring new threats to an empire already under pressure. Through it all, their lives become entwined by ambition, desire, betrayal, and power.
But who will survive in the end?
